Students Rebuild

April 4, 2011

Paper CraneAs you are all probably aware, on March 11, Japan was struck by a horrible earthquake, which sparked a tsunami and crisis at several nuclear power plants.  With a death toll of over 12,000 and great structural damage to northern Japan, with entire towns leveled and swept away.  Over 3 weeks later, the country is still struggling to get back on its feet.  It is imperative the CKI Clubs throughout New England and the world do our best to help those in need in Japan.

While your club can certainly raise money for the Red Cross to benefit Japan (and I strongly encourage you to do so!), here is an alternative service project that I learned about from Bentley Circle K: Students Rebuild is collected oragami paper cranes. Japanese legend says that he who folds one thousand paper cranes will be granted a wish.  Therefore, by collecting 100,000 paper cranes, Students Rebuild is giving 100 wishes to rebuild Japan.  They are also receiving a donation of $2 from the Bezos Family Foundation for each crane collected.  Therefore, not only will you help donate $200,000 to rebuild Japan, but you will be contributing to a large piece of artwork (made of 100,000 paper cranes) that symbolizes hope.  For more information, see http://studentsrebuild.org/japan/
